Kalavryta, a superb destination
Every spring, along with nature’s rebirth, we experience the desire to try new things and visit unknown places. We wish to explore places that are almost untouched by contemporary life. Kalavryta and its greater area are exactly this type of magic destination. Wonderful mountainous villages with friendly people, beautiful nature and monuments full of history are the highlights of a trip there.
The Rack railway, which passes through lush and pristine areas, is the ideal means to explore the incredible beauty of the wild landscape. The trip of the historic train lasts about an hour. It originates from Diakopton and passes through the steep Vouraikos gorge river, where big and smaller waterfalls carve the rocky sides. At “Portes”, the narrowest and most impressive point of the trip, the train enters the most interesting tunnel of the railway line. Along the journey, there are steep places where the Rack has to “show its teeth” and lock on the rails. An intermediate stop for a visit in the Monastery of the Great Cave completes the lovely spring excursion in nature.
Kalavryta is the final destination of the trip. This is a place full of history and incomparable natural beauty. A town built on the slopes of Mount Helmos in a privileged place full of fir trees. Stone mansions, cobble streets, traditional guest houses and an evergreen landscape make Kalavryta a favorite destination for all seasons. Especially at winter time, the small town becomes very popular thanks to the famous nearby ski resort. The numerous villages of the area and the Cave of the Lakes – an impressive geological phenomenon that combines 13 lakes- are great options for daily excursions.
TRAINOSE, always aiming to fulfill travelers’ desires, offers you the opportunity to experience an unforgettable trip to a unique place!
Easter on Pelion
Pelion, the impressive mountain that overlooks the city of Volos, is a unique destination for all seasons. Particularly at Easter time, it is a great choice for those who seek a short break from dull city life. The area combines the beauty of nature -which is reborn every spring- with the comfortable guesthouses and warm hospitality of the locals. All these make up the ideal conditions for a wonderful Easter holiday.
The beautiful nature of Pelion -with its rich wooded hillsides, steep ravines, sharp peaks, gurgling brooks with crystal clear waters, wonderful lacy beaches- unfolds in all its glory before the visitor’s eyes. And, naturally, there is the miracle of the new life cycle that begins again after the deep winter sleep. The new tender leaves that shyly grow on the old plane trees, the enormous flowering chestnut-, walnut-, apple- and cherry trees, the colorful “rug” formed by the wildflowers, fill one’s eyes with colors and one’s soul with hope.
The mountain’s exploration includes Pelion’s twenty-four villages that are planted in the woods. Each one has its own distinct beauty. Stone streets, aged churches and renovated old mansions testify to the bygone days of prosperity that the region once experienced.
“Mountzouris”, the famous little train of Mt. Pelion, has been traveling tirelessly from Milies to Lehonia for over 100 years and continues to offer unique journeys through the traditional Pelion countryside. Interwoven with the history of Pelion, the train remains the best way to become acquainted with the wild nature and to travel back in time.
Naturally, visitors at this time of year will fully experience all Easter traditions; they will attend the church service on Holy Week, the Epitaph in each village and the service of the Resurrection of Christ, as well as partake in all Easter-day festivities.
TRAINOSE offers you a quick and comfortable trip to the city of Volos and the opportunity to experience a beautiful and devotional Easter in magical Pelion.

New Year’s Day! The first day of a brand new year and, at the same time, the heart of winter! A time full of hope for new things expected to come our way and anticipation of joyful, festive moments–be it precious family time or a trip to a snow-covered winter destination.
Such a destination is Agios Athanasios. Located near Edessa, the settlement is built on the slopes of Mt. Vora, at an altitude of 1,200 meters. Over the past few years, it has turned into one of the most popular winter destinations, thanks to its proximity to the famous ski center of Kaimaktsalan.
Agios Athanasios is a picturesque village with beautiful architecture, tile-covered stone houses, cobbled streets, traditional inns, restaurants and a unique view over Lake Vegoritis. The rugged mountain scenery paired with the fairytale beauty of the village make the place a winter resort of international caliber. Here you may relax and enjoy a restful and rejuvenating stay. A cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace of a village cafe or a visit to a traditional taverna with delicious local dishes turn into unforgettable experiences.
At only a short distance, Kaimaktsalan with its well-known ski center offers snow lovers moments of adventure. Winter sports aficionados will enjoy skiing or riding a snowmobile or sleigh. Epiphany, the perfect opportunity for a break!
Epiphany seems to be the «postscript» of the festive days. The joyful holidays of Christmas and New Year’s day are left behind and on the 6th of January we are about to welcome the last big holiday of the 13-day festive period.
On this day we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan river by John the Baptist. The day’s celebrations mix pagan and Christian customs. The tossing of the Holly Cross into the water symbolizes the blessing of water and the warding of evil spirits off the earth. Goblins leave and people are blessed by the Holly Spirit. In some regions of Greece, Epiphany is celebrated with the revival of traditions and customs that aim at good health and fertility.
Epiphany is an ideal opportunity for a short break before returning to ordinary life. For Athenians, this holiday is perfect for a day trip to Chalkida, where one might watch the tossing of the cross in the waters of Evripos and afterwards enjoy a glass of ouzo by the sea. Other wonderful ideas for the day are an excursion to the coastal Stylida or a short trip to the city of Volos, easily accessible to residents of Northern and Southern Greece as well.
Whichever is your choice, TRAINOSE is always there to take you fast and comfortably to your destination. Go on board and enjoy a relaxing, festive day!
Christmas in Florina
A festively decorated city, usually covered with snow, looking beautiful in the forest-green and snow-white background of the mountains that surround it. A picturesque city with pedestrian paths, neoclassical Macedonian buildings and a beautiful rushing river running through it. A city cover by mist on winter mornings. This is Florina!
Here, the holiday festivities culminate on Christmas Eve, when the locals light up huge fires on the streets of the city and of nearby villages. This custom has its origins in the fire lit by the shepherds to keep the new-born Christ warm and announce his birth to the world. Children and adults split into groups and prepare for days in advance, trying to steal and gather wood for the fire. The competition is great and the group that accumulates the most wood and lights the biggest fire is declared the winner. Naturally, a great feast is set by the fire, with Greek traditional music, tasty Christmas delicacies and lots of local wine. And everyone, locals and visitors, is welcomed to the festivity.
For those who love nature, choices are endless: a lovely walk in the forest – an excursion to magical Prespes, the two lakes with the rare ecosystem, which are only explored by wooden boats – a visit to the local picturesque fishing villages or to the island of Agios Achilleios, located on the small Prespa and connected to the mainland by means of a floating bridge – a tour to Arktouros’ wolf and bear shelters. Each one of these activities is a unique experience.
Sports lovers can enjoy the modern snow ski center at Vigla-Pisoderi, which features the longest ski-slope in Greece and offers a fantastic view to Prespes.
Florina promises its visitors a wonderful Christmas holiday. Offering daily railway services from Thessaloniki to Florina, TRAINOSE helps you fulfill your dreams for wonderful winter break.

The Vouraikos gorge is one of the most beautiful destinations in Greece. A scenic landscape marked by dense vegetation with towering trees and shady paths fascinates visitors. Picturesque mountainous villages with stone houses that seem to be planted in the forest offer unforgettable hospitality and steal the travelers’ hearts with their local delicacies and traditional sweets.
The Vouraikos river springs between the mountains Erymanthos and Helmos. Right after the town of Kalavryta, it creates a deep and steep gorge 20 km. long. It is in this area that the famous rack railway runs. The train’s journey begins at Diakopto and passes through impressive waterfalls. At the “Doors”, the narrowest and most spectacular point of the journey, the rack railway enters a tunnel marked at its two ends by huge iron gates that open only during the rack railway’s crossing.
