September 2014 – Wine tasting at Katakolo, with TRAINOSE
From 4 to 9 September 2014, TRAINOSE hosted a wine tasting event on board its trains for guests travelling between Katakolo and Ancient Olympia.
The event was co-sponsored by the Olympia Development Company (State of Ilia) and the wines were a generous offer by the local wineries ofMERKOURI, BRITNZIKI, STAVROPOULOU, OLYMPIAN LAND, MARKOGIANNI.
During the week the local wineries offered the international train passengers (passengers of the cruise ships that port in Katakolo), but the line regulars as well, tastes of their famous wines and local.
The event was accompanied by a photography exhibition about the railway in the area and its historical contribution to the development of the local economy. The line was first put in operation in 1822 , and was primarily used to transport raisin freight abroad, through the port of Katakolo.
Today, in the 21st century, the contribution of rail in the local economy has changed from, but not lessened in significance. The modern, diesel-powered trains, transport the locals from Katakolo to Olympia, but also the tourists arriving at the port of Katakolo on cruise vessels.
